Andreas Patz: Have you ever seen babies smile in their sleep?

To whom and why do they smile so carelessly, brightly and openly? Nobody knows the secret. It is a bright, iridescent and soothing mystery. I don’t even want to try to figure out why. I’m afraid to break something, startle…

Or, in a peaceful dream, he sees with his child’s eyes the bright blue sky, hidden from adults. The connection of the child’s soul with the kind and loving Creator has not yet been severed. The human sin has not stood between them and nothing prevents communication and… a smile. Or babies dream of a choir of angels singing: “Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!!” (Luke 2:14). They listen and believe that there really is peace on earth and people are happy. So, they become adults, they grow up and then…

It’s a shame these dreams end so soon. That you have to learn how cruel and unpredictable life is. To make sure that man rejected the very peace that was brought to earth and trampled on the good will that was offered; dressed in camouflage, hung himself with guns, loaded tanks and refueled fighter jets. Due to the noise of jet turbines and exploding shells, the child’s plea: “Please don’t shoot! It’s us kids!”

It is we, children, who pay with our lives for the fact that adults have not learned to live in peace, constantly someone finally wins, conquers, returns, liberates; because some devil keeps demanding blood…

Nothing changes in the sinful world: two thousand years ago, babies had to give their lives for adults. And here, too, they are put on the altar so that adults come to their senses and finally understand that war is bad.

And handfuls of earthy lumps of dirty earth are thrown at the wood that barely cover the little bodies. But they don’t hear the thumps of the wet earth thrown on their coffins, they are no longer there, they are far, far away. They look around in surprise and it seems to them that somewhere they have already seen and experienced all this. The melody is somehow too familiar to them – something near, warm, completely unforgettable and familiar. Have you ever seen babies smile in their sleep? ‘..
