Christian who lost his legs due to a drunk driver asked the court to write off all the debts of the accused

The Christian, who had to go through the amputation of limbs due to the fault of a drunk driver, asked in court to write off all the debts of the person who took away his health.

“I have a Savior who has forgiven me,” the man said and forgave the accused.

Darrin Ray lived in California with his wife and 3-year-old daughter, graduated from seminary, served as a deacon in a local church, and was a Christian counselor.

Everything changed on August 20, 2006.

“I got up that morning to go to church,” Ray recalls. – “My daughter was sitting in the back seat of the car. I was driving along the road at a speed of about 30 km / h, when a drunk man flew out towards me at a speed of more than 90 km / h, he crossed a double continuous line and made a head-on collision.”

The front of the car collapsed on both of Ray’s legs, and the car battery exploded, covering his hands with acid. His left thigh was broken in several places, and his right ankle was also broken. Ray’s daughter escaped with minor scratches.

After that, Ray spent a month in the hospital, where he underwent a series of surgeries. Doctors told him that his right leg and ankle were in such condition that it would take years of surgery.

“They told me that I was admitted to the hospital in the body of a 30-year-old man and would leave with the health of a 70-year-old,” Ray recalls. “Even numerous surgeries did not guarantee that my legs would ever be able to move. Therefore, they suggested amputation.

I didn’t know what to do, and then Jerry Roberts, the priest at the hospital who supported me and helped me through this, said, “Darrin, I know God has called you. Do you think there is such a calling – to be a professional patient for the rest of your life? “

And this prospect really amazed me. He said, “I cannot make the decision for you, but I think you know the decision you need to make. A solution that allows you to do what God wants you to do. “
So I chose amputation. “

After being discharged from the hospital, Ray returned to the seminary – and still was full of anger at the man who ruined his life.
“This was the fourth time this person had been driving under the influence of alcohol and pills,” he said.

But while reading Scripture, Ray came across the Sermon on the Mount, where Jesus prayed, “Forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors,” and then said, “If you will forgive other people when they sin against you, your Heavenly Father will forgive you”.

“I didn’t want to forgive this man,” Ray admitted. “But I knew that this is what God expects of me. And I prayed, “Lord, I don’t want to forgive. Help me to do what you want. ”

Some time later, at a court hearing, Ray appeared before a judge and asked him to forgive the amount of debt that this man owed his family.

“The judge looked at me and asked:“ Why do you want to forgive this person the debt? ” – He said. “And I looked at this judge and said:“ Because I have a Savior who has forgiven me. He paid off my debts that I could never pay off. “

“When I forgave this person, I was immediately released from bitterness and anger,” Ray continued. “When you think about how much Christ has forgiven you, it helps you to forgive those who have wronged you. Now I walk in freedom and integrity. “

Ray shared his powerful story of forgiveness in the new film “White Chair” from Christian organization “I Am Second”.

Today Darrin Rae is a pastor ministering to seniors and people with disabilities. He says he constantly reminds those struggling with physical challenges that even in difficult circumstances, God has a good plan for them.
