Don’t allow your ego stand between you and the Lord

Very often strongholds that hinder us in prayer are connected with our own egoism and egocentrism. I would like to quote the words of one tzadik on this subject:

“Explaining the words of Scripture, “I am standing between YHWH and you” (see Deuteronomy 5:5), Rabbi Michl of Zlochev said: “I am stands between YHWH and you.”

The fact is that the original Hebrew text can be read not only as “I stood between the Lord and you,” but also as “I stands between the Lord and you.”

“When a person says “I” and concentrates on it, he offends the Creator with this word, erecting a wall between himself and God. But whoever sacrifices his “I”, nothing separates him from the Creator. Of such a person it is said: “I belong to my Friend and His desire is turned to me.” For if I give my “I” to a Friend, then His love embraces me and removes what separated from Him.”

It seems to me that this is a very sensible biblical, even somewhere (albeit implicitly) New Testament observation. I will say that this often hindered me in prayer, in worship and in some kind of spiritual war. I prayed, I acted against some strongholds, I tried to throw off some mountain, I prayed against some forces of darkness and in front of me was my “I”. In everything, I seemed to think about myself, about what I, what me, what about me and what from me, how I, I, I … I remember who told me what, how they accepted me, or maybe, someone rejected me and so on.

And what to do with it? Even if this tzaddik understood, then we know exactly what to do. We need to use God’s faith. No need to panic: “I can’t do anything about it! God!” Of course I can’t do anything about it. But the Lord did! He crucified my ego on the Calvary cross. He dealt with all this garbage there, with all my tangles of pride, vanity, self-pity, resentment, all my thoughts, feelings, emotions, my false humility, my constant concentration on myself. He dealt with it all!

Have the faith of God, grab it and say, “You rotten old ego, you’re already dead! The Lord tore you apart with His wounds. I don’t owe you anything!” Romans 8:12 says, “You are no longer debtors to the flesh to live according to the flesh” (see Romans 8:12). What is it to live according to the flesh? It is to think, to experience and to act according to the flesh. But we are no longer indebted to it.

This is the real basis of our God’s faith! And when we accept it, don’t start panicking or become horrified  about our dead ends, but just start laughing at them because it’s a lie, then this haze starts to dissipate. I don’t want to say that it will disappear in one second, but it will dissipate gradually. And the clear light of the Lord will guide us in ourselves, this light will become our way, our new path.
