God’s Word is your life

Once, the leadership of the Roman state forbade Jews to study the Torah. Papos ben Jehuda met Rabbi Akiva, who held a public meeting and studied the Torah.

He asked: “Akiwa, aren’t you afraid of the government?”

Answer: “I will tell you a parable. What could it be compared to? Once the fox went to the river and saw fish swimming in different places. He asked them what they were afraid of. The fish admitted that they are afraid of human nets. Then the fox said: “Come ashore and let us live together, as our forefathers lived together in their time.”

Fish answered: “Are you really the smartest animal? You’re not smart, you’re stupid. If we are already afraid in our living place, how much would we be afraid in our dying place?”

It is the same with us when we are in trouble and we deal with the Torah, which is “your life and the length of your days” (Deuteronomy 30:20), how much trouble we would be in. then by giving it up.”

Babylonian Talmud, Berachot 61b
