“He justified and instigated the war against Ukraine”. Patriarch Kirill banned from entering Estonia

Estonia’s Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna has reintroduced the Magnitsky List, banning 58 people from entering Estonia, including Patriarch Kirill, the leader of the Russian Orthodox Church, and nine people who persecuted and imprisoned human rights activist Vladimir Kara-Murza, the Christian Megaportaal reported with reference to the Estonian Foreign Ministry and the Institute of Theology and Politics.

According to Tsahkna, these people were banned from entering the country because they were accomplices to serious human rights violations.

“Patriarch Kirill is one of the biggest supporters and apologists of Putin’s ideology,” said the Foreign Minister. “It is time to blacklist him. He justified and instigated the war against Ukraine.”

Tsahkna said people who support Russia’s nasty actions in Ukraine are not welcome in Estonia.

“I call on all countries to impose an entry ban on all supporters and perpetrators of Russia’s crimes.”

Already in April 2022, the European Parliament adopted a resolution condemning Patriarch Kirill’s role in Russia’s war against Ukraine and the NGO Human Rights Without Frontiers asked the International Criminal Court’s Prosecutor to hold Patriarch Kirill personally responsible for aiding and abetting the war against Ukraine.

A travel ban has also been imposed on nine individuals who accused and imprisoned Kara-Murza and against whom EU sanctions have not yet been imposed, as well as those linked to the death of Sergei Magnitsky.

“It is Estonia’s position that the persecutors and prisoners of Kara-Murza should be included in the global human rights sanctions regime,” said Tsahkna. “We will continue to work for the unconditional and immediate release of all Russian political prisoners and the prosecution of the perpetrators of the repression.”

The list has been amended to take account of the expiry of the travel ban imposed by an Estonian government decree, but there is no evidence that any of the individuals on the list are responsible.

“We have also updated the list of persons who have committed or supported serious human rights abuses who are not welcome in Estonia,” said Tsahkna.

Patriarch Kirill (Vladimir Mikhailovich Gundyayev) has previously been sanctioned by the UK, Canada, Lithuania, Australia and the Czech Republic, confiscating his property and/or banning his entry into the country for “supporting the war”.
General EU sanctions could not be imposed due to opposition from Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban. But he is already not allowed into the EU.
