He will call on me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him. (Psalm 91:15)
British newspapers told of a British submarine in WWII that lay helpless on the ocean floor and needed to be rescued. After two days, hope of raising her was abandoned. The crew, on orders of the commanding officer, began singing:
“Abide with me! Fast falls the eventide,
the darkness deepens – Lord, with me abide!
When other helpers fail and comforts flee,
Help of the helpless, oh, abide with Me!”
The officer explained to the men that they did not have long to live. There was no hope of outside aid because the surface searchers did not know the vessel´s position. Sedative pills were distributed to the men to quiet their nerves.
However, one sailor was affected more quickly than the others, and he fainted. In doing so he fell against a piece of equipment and set in motion the submarine´s jammed surfacing mechanism. Crying out to God delivered these men when there was no hope, and God used something simple as a hymn and a pill to get the submarine back to the surface and safely to the port.
“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.” Isaiah 43:2
