Love succeeds even when everything else fails

One of the special areas in which Wigglesworth took action was marriage issues. Wigglesworth always used God’s methods, so the solutions were lasting and effective.

Once a woman came to Wigglesworth for help for her son in his marriage. The young man once loved the Lord and married a good young woman, but after a while the young man left faith. His relationship in marriage began to deteriorate to such an extent that he left his wife and returned to his mother. The situation was difficult for the mother and caused her great grief.

Wigglesworth said to the woman, “Give me your handkerchief.” When she gave it, he put it between his hands and said, “Lord, punish this young man with reproof.” Returning the handkerchief to the woman, he ordered her to put it under her son’s pillow, but not to tell him about it.

When the woman came home, her son was gone, she did as Wigglesworth told her. When the son returned it was late and the woman was in bed. Some time later, the son went to his room, undressed and went to bed. As soon as his head touched the pillow, he felt a terrible conviction. Hastily, he got out of bed, knelt down and re-established his relationship with God. Then he dressed and called his mother, even though it was already midnight. “Don’t worry mom. I’m going home. I’ll see you tomorrow.” And left.
When he came to his wife, they reconciled gloriously.

Many marriages were saved by Wigglesworth’s ministry, but always miraculously because his approach was not always tactful. However, Wigglesworth was always sincere and his infectious sincerity shone like the sun peeking out of a cloud. He also had a love and compassion and he could not hide it behind his rough exterior. Shortly after the couple recovered, after the initial shock of his approach, they poured out their hearts to him. As he listened, tears could stream down his face. Every couple he served left him with their problems solved.

In such cases, Christians often unwittingly lean in the direction of psychological approaches. Normally human nature works this way. But Wigglesworth kept his ears ready for the voice of God. He wanted to hear what advice the Father was giving.

Wigglesworth had no special teaching. His main driving force was the love of God in his soul. He knew that without it, technical calculations meant nothing.

He lived the principles of 1 Corinthians 13:1-2:
If I speak in human and angelic tongues, but have no love, then I am a ringing brass, or a resounding cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy, and know all mysteries, and have all knowledge and all faith, so that I can move mountains, but do not have love, then I am nothing.

Smith Wigglesworth represented these principles in his life and ministry. Paul goes on to say, “Love is longsuffering, showing mercy…” (1 Corinthians 13:4). Love offers the best possible directions in different situations. It sees the potential for good even in the worst characters. For this reason, love succeeds even when everything else fails. Love brought success to Wigglesworth’s ministry.
