The Orthodox Patriarch of Constantinople once again condemned the attitude of the Moscow Patriarchate towards the war in Ukraine, reports the Christian Megaportal inVictory with reference to Vatican News.
“How can you claim to be the brother of another nation and bless the war your own country is waging against them? How can you leave those Orthodox Christians who you claim are under your jurisdiction to the mercy of Russian bombing?” – Bartholomew asked in an interview with the Greek newspaper Patris.
He called Russia’s invasion of Ukraine a disgrace.
“This is a great shame for those who inspired it and for those who continue to directly or indirectly justify and support it. It is also a shame for those who remain silent, who tolerate it, who pretend not to see it. Innocent people are dying every day. Civilians are being bombed. Cities and villages were razed to the ground. Holy places are desecrated, as recently happened with the Transfiguration Cathedral in Odessa, which was seriously damaged by a Russian missile attack,” recalled the Orthodox Patriarch of Constantinople.
As the honorary head of the Orthodox Church, he emphasized in every possible way that this war was not at all sacred, but godless, evil and destructive. This is destructive primarily for Ukraine, but also for Russia as an aggressor. Bartholomew expressed hope that the leaders of the Russian Orthodox Church will listen to the suffering of people on both sides and join efforts to end the war and establish peace.
“Unless they hope, which we do not want to believe, that a war launched by their state will satisfy their ecclesiastical claims. If they hope so, their efforts will be in vain!” – added the Patriarch of Constantinople in an interview with the Patris newspaper.
