Repairing the past

“…if I have extorted something from someone, I will return it fourfold.” Luke 19:8

Zacchaeus understood that your relationship with Yahweh cannot be in order until your relationship with those whom you have hurt is in order. Joseph discovered that being prime minister doesn’t mean much when family relationships are messed up. Relationships are like a house. If you don’t take care of them, your task is not to repair them, but to rebuild them. Each of us carries past experiences. They affect our relationships, our choices, our view of ourselves, and even our understanding of Yahweh. Your spiritual life cannot be full if your past is untidy.

Jacob lived in this way for a long time. He took advantage of his brother Esau by manipulating him out of the birthright. When things got heated between him and his brother, he left the country. When he returned home, he was very afraid of his brother. In his case, the relationship with his brother was eventually repaired, but that is not always the case. It is best to put the past in order immediately.

Stitching up wounded relationships, dealing with festering regrets, letting go of feelings for the person who betrayed you – all of these are dormant within us. Suddenly, some trigger pull wakes them up. It can be an anniversary, a familiar face in the crowd or a song on the radio. But these things won’t go away until we fix them.

Do you understand now that forgiveness is not only beneficial for the other party, but also for you. Is there a relationship in your life that you should fix today? If so, take care of it!
