Sabbath – God’s Holiday!

What is the Sabbath? There is a simple translation of this word in Russian – “stop all activities” or “be at peace”. And it shall come to pass on the seventh day of the week. It was on this day that the Lord decided to rest from His work after the process of creating the earth.

Did the Lord need a break?

I do not believe so. As we know from many scriptures, God does not become tired. But I am sure it is God’s foresight that shows that we humans need a break!

“By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work.  Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.”(Genesis 2: 2-3).

These verses from the first book of the Bible show that God not only blessed this day as a time of rest, but also consecrated it — this is the only example. The Lord specifically assigns a day of rest and separates it from other days.

Saturday is a great religious holiday for the people of Israel. Of course, not all Jews keep this day, but many children of Israel honor this day with special holiness. We Jewish Christians celebrate time with God on this day. It is the highest peace of the human soul – to meet your Almighty!

To be with the Lord, to exert as much as possible in your soul to unite with Him, to hold a holy meeting on this day, as the Scriptures teaches — it is a celebration of our Sabbath!

The Sabbath as a feast is equal to other religious days in Israel, as Leviticus 23: 1-3 says:

The Lord said to Moses,  “Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘These are my appointed festivals, the appointed festivals of the Lord, which you are to proclaim as sacred assemblies. “‘There are six days when you may work, but the seventh day is a day of sabbath rest, a day of sacred assembly. You are not to do any work; wherever you live, it is a sabbath to the Lord. (Leviticus 23: 1-3).

So it turns out that the Jews have 52 holidays a year if every Saturday is considered a holiday? So yes! But this is not a holiday for the sake of solemnity and a festive way of life. It is a holiday to lift your soul and your life to the Lord God!

What else according to the Scripture is Sabbath? The Sabbath is also a sign between God and the people of Israel:

“Say to the Israelites, ‘You must observe my Sabbaths. This will be a sign between me and you for the generations to come, so you may know that I am the Lord, who makes you holy.  ‘Observe the Sabbath, because it is holy to you. Anyone who desecrates it is to be put to death; those who do any work on that day must be cut off from their people.  For six days work is to be done, but the seventh day is a day of sabbath rest, holy to the Lord. Whoever does any work on the Sabbath day is to be put to death.  The Israelites are to observe the Sabbath, celebrating it for the generations to come as a lasting covenant.” (Ex. 31: 13-16).

The word “sign” indicates that it is a sign from above, a seal to Israel for centuries, that the Sabbath is the day of the whole nation! The word “covenant” signifies a covenant, and the word “lasting ” indicates that the execution of this commandment lasts forever, it cannot be revoked.

Sabbath is important but the most important thing is that each of us has a day off. And even if you are a non-Jew, resting with God is important to you. Man is so created that he becomes tired regularly, he is not eternal. When the strength is gone, he loses vigilance and becomes emotionally tired. Only the time you spend with God will give you the opportunity to stop, meditate, worship before God, turn to spirituality within yourself, change your mind and find peace in prayer, the true peace of Jesus Christ.

The Sabbath is the fourth commandment of the Lord. But how important it is to remember that God said at the beginning, “Love the Lord!” All other commands come down to the simple phrase “Love!”. A person must be loved – it creates obedience and meaningful actions in his life.

Finally, the most important thing is to know the Lord of Sabbath, to worship Him alone, and to believe in Him alone! The Bible says of Jesus, “The Son of man is Lord of the sabbath” (Matthew 12: 8).

He – Jesus (Yeshua) – is the owner of rest and peace. Whatever your situation, turn to God in prayer, conduct a sacred meeting with your faithful friends, seek God — and see the Sabbath Lord, Jesus Himself, and how He can warm us with His peace and rest. Choose a day for peace and you will not regret it: many things will fall into place, because time spent alone with God will change a person’s life.

Be blessed! A true Sabbath in life, and a true Sabbath in the knowledge of the Lord!
