The Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation put on the wanted list the former head of the Baptists, Yury Sipko, who was charged with military “fakes”

The Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation has put a 71-year-old religious figure and former vice-president of the Baptist World Alliance Yury Sipko on the wanted list, Christian Megaportal inVictory reports with reference to Mediazona.

On August 8, the Investigative Committee reported that a case had been opened against the pastor for spreading military “fakes” based on political, ideological, racial, national or religious hatred, (part 2 of article 207.3 of the Criminal Code). According to the investigation, in March 2022, Sipko posted a video in which experts found “deliberately false information” about the actions of the Russian army in Ukraine.

Searches in the Sipko case took place in Moscow and Kaluga. In particular, the security forces came to the building of the Word of Life Pentecostal Church and to its Bishop Albert Ratkin, who became a witness in the pastor’s criminal case.

In the evening of the same day, a series of television stories prepared in advance according to one template were launched on Russian TV channels.

“Pastor Yury Sipko obviously irritated the authorities when he was still the head of the RS ECB. Since Stalin’s time, when, in fact, this council was organized, the authorities got used to seeing as its head gray officials from religion (or even directly – employees in civil clothes), who sullenly repeated the slogans of this very government. In the Soviet years, legal religious leaders had to “fight for peace”, but today, respectively, for the not war operation. Pastor Sipko blew up this stereotype, he took on that “prophetic ministry”, which, it would seem, had long since disappeared in the silent Russian Protestantism, which remained so only in name, but not in spirit,” Novaya Gazeta wrote.

“Pastor Sipko is being persecuted precisely as a religious figure who bases his beliefs on the Gospel, and not on the phrases of President Putin. From his example, believers should learn a lesson: the Gospel and other sacred texts are now allowed only to the extent that they do not contradict the living and ruling source of truth. And the religious leaders who remained in Russia seem to have fully learned this lesson, ”the article concluded.
