The Orthodox Church of Ukraine switches to the New Julian calendar from September 1

On September 1, along with the onset of a new church year, the Orthodox Church of Ukraine recalled its transition to the New Julian calendar, in accordance with the decision taken by the highest authoritative conciliar institution of the church – the Local Council, Christian Megaportal inVictory reports with reference to slovoproslovo.info.

This information was published on the official Facebook page of the OCU. The changes in the new calendar are that the dates of established feasts, periods of fasting, communities and days of veneration of saints are shifted 13 days back compared to the old calendar, and now they are celebrated 13 days earlier. For example, the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos will now be celebrated on September 8 (instead of September 21), the Exaltation of the Holy Cross on September 14 (instead of September 27), and the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos on October 1 (instead of October 14).

Regarding the Christmas holidays, it should be noted that the Advent Fast will begin on November 15, which will last until December 24, and Christmas itself will be celebrated on December 25.

This will also affect the period of Lent, which will last from March 18 to May 4, and Easter in 2024 will be celebrated on May 5.

Also, the Orthodox Church of Ukraine noted that the process of preparation for the introduction of a modern and accurate calendar, which is used by most Orthodox Churches, continued for several years.

In addition, the Local Council has provided an opportunity for parishes and monasteries that wish to keep the old Julian calendar.

“The calendar reform will take place without coercion, calmly and judiciously, giving everyone the opportunity to accept the necessary changes gradually and consciously,” the OCU said.
