Through the valley

“Even though I walk. through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me…” Psalm 23:4

The pasture was left bare after grazing the sheep, so every year the shepherd had to lead the flock to a new pasture. The road there was usually through dark valleys and along narrow rocky paths. The shepherd beat the sheep with his whip to keep them going and protected them from attackers with his staff.

One day our Shepherd will do the same for us. He comes and leads us through the dark valley of the shadow of death to His house. People who otherwise don’t know much about the Bible often know the 23rd Psalm. It is quoted on the tombs of beggars and engraved on the tombstones of kings. Why are these words so beloved? For several reasons.

Because we all have to face death at some point. This is a moment that none of us can delay or put off. This happens even to those who eat healthily and take vitamins regularly. Exercising the body can give us a few extra heartbeats, modern medicine can even give us several extra years, but in the end the end will come!

We do not have to face death alone. Yeshua said: “…  I go and prepare a place for you…” (John 14: 3). Simon Cameron once told the story of an old Scottish woman on her deathbed who was asked by a pastor: “Maggie, are you afraid of death?” The woman replied: “Oh no, my Father owns the lands on both sides of the river.”

Rejoice, for You do not have to walk your path alone. Know that everything you miss in this life is but a pale shadow of the inheritance that awaits for you in eternity.
