Where do you turn when you get bad news

“When it was reported to the house of David, saying, ‘The Arameans have camped in Ephraim,’ his heart and the hearts of his people shook as the trees of the forest shake with the wind. Then the LORD said to Isaiah, ‘Go out now to meet Ahaz, you and your son Shear-jashub, at the end of the conduit of the upper pool, on the highway to the fuller’s field'” (Isa 7:2-3).

“And when King Hezekiah heard it, he tore his clothes, covered himself with sackcloth and entered the house of the LORD” (Isa 37:1).

The book of Isaiah sets up an intentional contrast between two very different reactions of father and son to the news of armies marching against Jerusalem. Ahaz cowered and went to the water source to prepare for the siege. Hezekiah assumed a posture of repentance and went immediately to the house of God. What do we do and where do we go when we hear bad news? Although we all too easily begin “checking our water sources” by allowing our reflexes of fear to take over, the Lord longs for us to call on him first, to be our 911, and the first responder in every crises!

“Some boast in chariots and some in horses, But we will boast in the name of the LORD, our God” (Ps 20:7).
